Changes in renal functions were studied in rats treated with cadmium. Subcutaneous injections of CdC12(2 mg Cd/kg day) for 16 days induced a marked -)olyuria and a reduction in urine osmolality. These changes were accor -ipanied by increase in urinary excretions of various solutes, such as proteins, glucose, urea, calcium, phosphate, chloride, and potassium. The change in urine flow was proportional to the change in total osmotic solute excretion. Creatinine excretion and T H,o remained unchanged. From these results we suggest that the mechanism of Cd-induced polyuria is an osmotic diuresis initiated by inhibition of proximal tubular reabsorption of various substances.
